162 THEISLAND ACADIANS

Unfortunately, there was no one to take over and organize the project so it did not get beyond this forum’.

The Buotes’ newspaper did, however, successfully give rise to other projects, in particular the Association des instituteurs acadiens de 'fle-du-Prince-Edouard (Acadian Teachers’ Association) which was to play a major role in French education and the survival of the Acadian culture. We will examine the activities of this organization further on.

Published for almost twenty years, L’Impartial disappeared from the scene in 1915 because of financial difficulties resulting mainly from the economic climate brought on by World War I’.

The establishment of the Société Mutuelle !Assomption (Mutual Assumption Society) on the Island in 1905, proved to be an important stage in the evolution of Acadian nationalism. Founded in 1903 by Acadians in Massachusetts, the society spread almost everywhere there was a sizeable Acadian community. Its aims were to promote the social, intellectual and moral well-being of Acadians, to administer an insurance fund to protect Acadian families, and to set up a scholar- ship fund to help train an elite’. The Mutual Society paralleled and complemented the activities of the National Assumption Society which was founded during the first national conventions and later renamed the National Acadian Society.
