Placed in an awkward position, the Acadian priests did not openly support the project although they could see that it would be a great asset for the Acadians. As members of the clergy in the diocese of Charlottetown, they felt obliged to give their full and open support to St. Dunstan’s, the diocesan college, although little importance was given there to the teaching of French. In the light of this position, some laymen favoured a compromise that would allow the creation of a chair of French at St. Dunstan’s. This was suggested by Sylvain, an anonymous contributor to L’'Impartial who nevertheless left the final decision in the hands of the clergy: “I am far from wishing to be stubborn with regard to cooperating with St. Dunstan’s.
