The reference to “our hay at Pictou” concerned a shor- tage of hay on P.E.I., and the need to import it from Nova Scotia. In 1905 the Farmers’ Institutes for Townships 27 and 28 had 400 tons of hay imported.28
By the end of the decade the idea of having a tunnel built under the Northumberland Strait had given way to that of getting a ferry capable of sailing throughout the year. But the solution got further delayed as Canada became entangled in the first orld War. "
