Dear Mr.iMacNair, ? 9% As Chairman of the Light Committee of Trinity United Church,

Charlottetown, I would like to call to your attention a condition which has existed in our church for a great number of years and which

in my opinion should be remedied as soon as possible.

I refer to the totally inadequate lighting in the church audito;ium. The fixtures that are at present installed were never intendud‘for such use. The centre fixtures and those under t bel- cony hive a poor quality glass in them, cutting off almost 50“ 0f the light generate . Those over the balcony reflect most of the light up to the ceiling, which absorbs around 40% of the light striking it. These latter fixtures are recommended for use only where suspen- ded frsm low ceilings of a light color.

'A test made of the amount of light striking a book held in the

hand showed it to be so small as to not give a reading on'the instru- ment.

Preliminary to placing any detailed recommendations before the Trustee Board I consulted several of the leading illumination engin- eers in Canada and they all recommend a lantern type of fixture. This

fixtur: would reflect most of the light downward and only a small amount on the walls and ceiling°

Persons who have attended this church have remarked that beyond a doubt it is the poorest lit church of its size in Canada, and pessone sitting in the gallery find the glire from the lights very annoying, frequently causing headaches.

The Trustee Board do not feel at thisgtime like going to the entire expense of purchasing new fixtures and rather than let the matter drop completely the thought occurred to me that possibly the

various societies and organizations in the church would cooperate in purchasing one or more of the fixtures.

The preposed layout of outlets is as follows:

2 rows of six fixtures hanging from the ceiling. and 17 smaller fixtures evenly spaced under the balcony.

Under the proposed lighting about five times as much light

would be made useful.at no extra kilowatt hon? consumption and to be consistent with modern practice, ten times asfmuch light could be provided at a very small increase. W

The cost of the main ceiling lanterns will be approximately

fifty lollars each. These proposed to be used under the balcony would cost around ten dollars each.

' Should you require further details regarding these fixtures I

will he only too glad to endeavour to explain any of the details of installation. E

May we count on your previding the means of purchasing one or more fixtures? ‘“

Yours very truly; ”r?

A!
