She was born in Abram’s Village in 1943. She has had several hit songs in- cluding Moi j’mange, Y’a une étoile pour vous, and Je veux toute toute la vivre ma vie. In 1979, the Association du disque et de I’industrie du specta- cle du Québec awarded her the Prix Félix for her album Libre (1977) which was the best-selling album of the year in French Canada. Acadian women in the Evangeline Region have long been recognized for the quality of their craftsmanship, especially with regard to hooked rugs, quilts and knitting. The annual craft competitions organized by the Agricultural Exhi- bition since 1903 have undoubtedly helped maintain the high stand- ards of craftsmanship. Héléne Gallant has been making hooked rugs since 1937. She is known for her creativity and art- istry.
