The following words and expressions are currently used in the Evangeline Region. Although they are not found in modern French dictionaries, most of them origi- nate from France. The Acadian word is given first, then the definitions in standard French and in English.
abrier (tr. v.) : Couvrir. To cover.
ajeuve (adv.) : Tout a l’heure. A few minutes ago.
aouindre (tr. v.) : Sortir un objet d’un lieu. To bring out an object.
beluette (f. n.) : Etincelle. Spark.
belvet ou beluet (n. m.) : Bleuet. Blueberry.
bezette (adj.) : Maladroit, simple d’esprit. Clumsy, simple-minded.
borlic (m. n.) : Bigorneau, littorine. Periwinkle.
borlicoco (m.n.) : 1. Bigorneau, littorine. Periwinkle. 2. Nombril. Navel, belly button.
borvocher (intr. v.) : Consommer des boissons alcoolisées souvent et immodérément. To drink alcohol often and excessively.
bouchure (f. n.) : Cloture. Fence.
boueille (f. n.) : Bouée. Buoy.
boufille (f. n.) : Bulle. Bubble.
caouette (f.n.) : Nuque. Nape of the neck.
chancre (m. n.) : 1. Crabe. Crab. 2. Cancer. Cancer coffre (m. n.) : Cercueil. Coffin.
courser (tr. v.) : Courser les chemins: se promener sans but précis. To run around. Courser les filles: frequenter les filles. To chase girls.
cotitange (m. n) : Dépense. Expense.
dorsoué (m. n) : Dressoir, vaisselier. Cupboard.
drapeau (m. n.) : Couche de bébé. Diaper.
éguiber (tr. v.) : Vider un poisson ou une volaille. To clean fish or poultry. élouése (f. n.) : Eclair. Lightning.
encens (f. n.) : Gomme a macher. Chewing gum.
engotter (s’) (pron. v.) : S’étouffer en mangeant. To choke. éparer (tr. v.) : Etendre. To spread.
évargué (adj.) : Surexcité. Wild (person).
éventer (tr. v.) : Sentir, humer. Smell.
feu chalin (m. n.) : Eclair sans tonnerre. Heat lightning.
forbir (tr. v.) : Laver le plancher. To scrub the floor.
fordilloux, fordillouse (adj.) : Frileux, frileuse. Sensitive to cold.
fripouner (intr. v.) : Grignoter, manger entre les repas. To nibble, to eat between meals.
fripounerie (f. n.) : Friandise. Junk food. galance (f. n) : Balancoire. Swing. galesses (f. n.) : Bretelles. Suspenders.
