9. Gonzague Arsenault
Louis Gonzague Arsenault, son of Maxime Arsenault and Modeste Barriault, was born on 10 March 1843. On his birth- certificate in the Mont Carmel parish register he is recorded simply as "Louis", the priest having neglected to write his entire name. The youngest boy of the family, he inherited the homestead.
On 25 January 1870, Gonzague married Philomene Arsenault, daughter of Alexis Arsenault and Blanche Arsenault of Abram's Village. Born on 28 March 1846, she was her husband's second cousin (although according to the popular parlance of the day they would be referred to as third cousins). They had 12 children, three of whom died in infancy. Philoméne died at the age of 60 on 8 February 1907. A year later Gonzague remarried, this time to Julithe Gallant, daughter of Dosithée Gallant and Emilienne Arsenault of Mont Carmel. No children were born of this marriage.
Gonzague was a music lover and a musician. He played the peddle organ and sang mainly religious hymns. His favourite expression was "adorable". He passed away on 16 August 1927 while his second wife Julithe, died three months earlier on 18 May 1927. The main part of their house still stands. It belongs Gdnkayue AtseHautt to Rita Arsenault, widow of Amand (a Elizée) Arsenault. (1843-1927). This is the
only known picture of Gonzague. Unfortunately, no photo has been found of any of his two wives.
Jack Arsenault (1875-1955). Commonly known as Jack Gonzague, he lived in Cape Egmont and operated a lobster factory for many years.
