10. Léon and Marie Arsenault
And she cried.
All of a sudden, a fox who was passing by, said: “My dear Mother Blackbird, why are you crying?” She said:
“T had laid eggs for my winter and I unfortunately went visiting today, and while I was gone someone came here and they ate all of my eggs.”
Well, the fox said:
“T have a good feeling of who did it. I saw Roubi the dog prowling around here, and that Roubi is so bold that I wouldn't be surprised that he is the one who took your eggs.”
She said:
“Now, I won't have any eggs for the winter.”
“Hah!” he said, “I think I know how we could catch him. Lay more eggs and I'm sure that he will come back for more.”
So Mother Blackbird sat down in her nest for a couple of days and she laid more eggs. One night, the fox hid around Mother Blackbird's house looking out for Roubi the dog. All ofa
sudden, Roubi arrived and the fox jumped and caught him. He said:
“Well, I caught you now! You're the one who stole Mother Blackbird's eggs, and now you are bold enough to come over for more? Well now, we are going to eat you!”
“Well, if you promise not to eat me, I know where there are plenty of eggs. If you like, I will get you some, as many as you want to stock up for winter.”
“Oh”, Mother Blackbird said:
“He's not very fat, so if he wants to find us some eggs we will not touch him, we'll spare his life.”
Roubi therefore left and went to a farm where he was sure to find lots of eggs. He came back with a full basket. Oh, was Mother Blackbird happy! The fox said:
“Wouldn't it be delicious if we had bacon to go with the eggs?”
