11. Léna Arsenault Barriault 
     
    
   
   
    
     Apart from giving birth to eight children, Lena welcomed two two-year old orphans into her 
     
     home, Freddie Arsenault and Richard Gaudet. Freddie stayed with the family for nine years, 
     
     while Richard was unofficially adopted and remained with Lena and Arcade until their deaths. 
     
    
   
   
    
     Lena also did a lot of knitting for others. Many mittens, socks and heavy sweaters were 
     
     made with her fingers, sometimes late into the evening. She also hooked large quantities of 
     
     floor mats which she often sold to travelling salesmen to help buy much needed things for the 
     
     house, especially oilcloths for the floors or flannelette sheets to keep the family warm on cold 
     
     winter nights. Also during the winter, Lena roped nets for local fishermen. Her children still 
     
     remember how, on arriving home from school, they had to crawl on their hands and knees to 
     
     get under the nets strung across the kitchen or the front room, as the living room was called. 
     
    
   
   
    
     Arcade passed away on 30 August 1962 and Lena died two months later on 27 October. 
     
     Both died of cancer.

     1) Ernest (10 April 1921) enlisted in the Canadian Navy in 1941 during the Second World 
     
     War. He was reported missing on 20 September 1943 when the ship on which he was serving, 
     
     the H.M.S.C. St. Croix, was lost as a result of enemy action while serving on convoy duty in 
     
     the Atlantic Ocean. 
     
    
   
   
    
     2) Rita (10 April 1922) entered the Congrégation de Notre-Dame in Montreal in 1942 and 
     
     took her final vows in 1950. For many years she went under the name of Sister Saint Ernest- 
     
     Joseph in memory of her deceased brother. She died in Antigonish, N.S. on 4 November 
     
     1984. 
     
    
   
   
    
     3) Edna (24 April 1923) married Ralph Pilgrim on 8 June 1946. Address: Ottawa, Ontario.
