     1953 he started dragging for scallops, the first one in the Evangeline region to adventure in 
     
     that type of fishing. For some 13 years, he sailed extensively in the waters of the Maritimes. 
     
     On the Island, John dragged scallops from the ports of Miminegash, Wood Islands, 
     
     Georgetown and Souris; in Nova Scotia he fished off Havre Boucher and Pictou; in New 
     
     Brunswick he found scallops in the waters of Richibouctou and in 1965 he hit the jackpot in 
     
     the vicinity of the Magdalen Islands. It is in fact there where he experienced his most 
     
     successful season having the privilege, with a few other fishermen, of dragging an untouched 
     
     scallop bed and of introducing the scallop fisheries to the Magdalen Islands. The catches were 
     
     so abundant that he had as many as seven men working for him on the Mary Noéilla. John was 
     
     the first Island fishermen to drag scallops off the Magdalen Islands where in 1966 he sold his 
     
     boat and abandoned scallop-fishing commercially. 
     
    
   
   
    
     Before resuming fishing lobster, which he had temporarily abandoned, John did some 
     
     exploratory scallop-dragging for the Federal Department of Fisheries and received a contract to 
     
     fish Snow Crab in Souris. He then bought an old boat and went back to lobster-fishing, but 
     
     catches being so poor he sold his gear and his boat around 1968. He then found seasonal work 
     
     at the Acadian Fishermen's Cooperative. Undermined by a lung cancer, he soon had to quit 
     
     that employment. He passed away on 27 February 1972, a few weeks before his 58" birthday.
