John died May 22, 1914, interred at Kingsboro Prince Edward Island, in the East Point Baptist Church Cemetery. Being that he was oldest son, he knew what hard work was from a very early age. When his father divided his original holding, Jack took over his section, clearing and farming the land. He built a very large home and barn. Knowing the value of the lumber they were clearing of their farm, Jack not only farmed, but he built and ran a sawmill. A brook runs through the gully in the centre of all the Bruce farms. The _ brook was dammed on Jack's property until it was many feet deep. The saw mill was operated by a power driven water wheel. How large and how many years this mill was in operation was not known. Hannah was never a strong woman. The hard work on the farm as well as bearing ten children took its toll. She died after being in failing health for many years.
