Alec Bruce Harry accepted progress when it came. He had "the lights" installed when the lines were strung east of Souris in 1952. This was a real luxury. He purchased a used truck in 1943 and a tractor in 1947. Harry learned to drive at the age of 61 -a time when many people contemplated retiring.. While Harry had an affinity for horses, he found that the tractor was not as cooperative as his animals. On his first attempt to park the tractor in the garage, the tractor refused to stop no matter how loudly or emphatically Harry hollered "Whoal" It ignored Harry and went right through the garage and out through the back wall. Mabel earned her own reputation as a hardworking, warm hearted person who welcomed family and neighbours to her home. She helped with the grain and potatoes as well as the animals on the farm and probably loved her hens the most. Raising seven children saw her baking bread, knitting, canning and preserving. During the late 1950's Harry became ill. She helped nurse him until he passed away. Mabel was remarried to Preston Bryanton, a widowed farmer and a native of Spring Valley P.E.I. and a resident of Rollo Bay in 1963. He came to Red Point and shared her home on the Snake Road until his death in 1971. He was interred in the Union Cemetery in Souris West. She remained in her own home on the family farm in 1982. It wasn't until she reached the age of 92 that family and friends convinced her to move to the Senior Citizen's Apartments in Sowis. She brought her love of flowers with her and grew them profusely inside and outside her unit. When she was 100, she slipped and fell bringing in rainwater to water her flowers, and broke her pelvis and arm. Her next move was to the Colville Manor in Souris where her large family and friends visited her regularly. She remained there until her death at the remarkable age of 107. At the time of her passing she was the oldest woman in Prince Edward Island and was admitted into the Centenarian Hall of Fame.
