Alec Bruce
One year the snow in the woods was too deep, so he shovelled snow for the C.P.R. in St. John New Brunswick. The first winter that he was married, he went off as usual to Maine, but it was a long, lonely winter and he vowed that he would never go again. Arthur's father-in-law had given him a wood lot in the Baltic and every year after this, as soon as he had hauled his boat and finished ploughing, he'd work in his own lumber woods, cutting fire wood, pulp, lumber and materials for building his own lobster traps, all by himself. His brother George joined him on many occasions. =
When the middle of March drew near, he would quit the woods and stay at home to work on his boat engine and fishing gear. He would rig trawis, mend the nets, paint the boat and install the motor. This is a busy time of year for a fisherman and as Bill and Blair became older, they were able to assist their father. Arthur loved his children. From the time they could walk and talk, they would accompany him in the truck, travelling to the shore, to Souris or just around the fields on the tractor. He taught them all to drive at an early age.
In the fall of 1954, Arthur was baptized and joined the fellowship of believers at the East Point Baptist Church, where he attended regularly. He sang in the choir, taught a Sunday School Class and served as Superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. 4 ae
Arthur loved politics. Though he never ran for office, he was busy Basin Head Harbour at election time, organizing and attending poll meetings, rallies and conventions. Arthur and Evelyn enjoyed meeting people both in private life and people prominent in Canadian life. A highlight was being invited to a dinner held for Governor-General Leger, while he was in Charlottetown.
He enjoyed working within Fisherman's organizations, trying to make life better for his fellow fishermen. He served as Vice-President of the P.E.|. Fisherman's Association for several years, then was elected President, a position which he heid for several terms. During this time he joined in a group of ten individuals within the industry to travel to the British Isles to see first hand how the industry was conducted there. He was also a member of another group that travelled to Norway, Sweden and Denmark. He was later appointed as a representative from the Canadian Maritime Provinces to represent Canada at the I.C.C.A.T. Meetings in Spain where the world met to discuss the rules and regulations of the World Tuna Fishery. Another trip saw him part of a delegation visiting Mallorca in the Mediterranean.
Arthur was a member of the committee that formed the North Lake Fisherman's CO-OP. He was a part of the Farmer's Marketing Board with regular meetings in Charlottetown, and travelled as far as Winnipeg and Vancouver.
He was blessed with the talent of being an eloquent orator and was much in demand as a speaker at anniversaries, wedding receptions etc. He was interviewed many times on television and had several letters to the editor published. He passed away after suffering with cancer for eight and half years.
