At birth she was described as a "blue baby". She was unable to walk or talk and today the condition is called Spina Bifida. She lived for six years, six weeks and six days. 2. ii George A. Bruce born 1882, Red Point Prince Edward Island, married Nov. 16, 1906, at United States, Manning Hearsey, born Dec. 24, 1873, Freeport Nova Scotia, (son of Harvey Hearsey and Susan Mullins) resided in Kingsboro PEI, died April 26, 1959, Kingsboro Prince Edward Island, interred at Kingsboro Prince Edward Island, in the East Point Baptist Church Cemetery. Mabel died 1960, interred at Kingsboro Prince Edward Island, in the East Point Baptist Church Cemetery. They lived in the United States until 1931, when they moved back to Canada and settled in Kingsboro. The depression in the United States was devastating. The banks had collapsed and savings accounts disappeared overnight. They returned : home to stay at her brother Ray's. They had a little money left and were able Mabel and Manning to purchase a small farm owned by Willie MacLean, in Kingsboro. The property had a small home and barn. Manning knew nothing of farming, but with Ray's help over the years cutting hay, sowing and cutting grain, they managed to eke out a small living with a couple of cows, pigs and hens. Ray supplied their winter's wood initially for 50 cents a cord, later he received $1.00. iv Robert W. Bre TART © His brother Ray told the story of his asking his two older brothers, Rob and Elliott to V. 1316 ACE 25 make arrangements to have his share of the farm turned over to Ray, as he would MAN STEWART not be back from the service. ‘ He sailed from Halifax Nova Scotia on January 13, 1917 for England and died five days later from spinal meningitis, a disease contracted previous to, or upon boarding the ship in Halifax. His funeral was conducted the following day and his remains were laid to rest beneath the green billows of the Atlantic Ocean in sight of England's shore. Two of his childhood friends, Jack Robertson and Wallace Rose were aboard the same ship at the time of Walter's death. He never had the opportunity of meeting the enemy as he had hoped. He died a United Baptist Church hero's death and the two medals received by his mother are currently in the possession of his nephew Merton Bruce. His name is enshrined on the Naval War Monument in Point Pleasant Park in Halifax and on a plaque on the wall of the East Point United Baptist Church in Kingsboro. 8. x Ray W. Bruce born July 17, 1880, Red Point Prince Edward Island, resided in Portsmouth VA, occupation: U.S.M.C./Tailor, married 1907, at the home of Peter Ching, Jeanette Jane (Nettie) Ching, born November 4 1885, St. Catherines Prince Edward Island, (daughter of James Ching and Jessie Jane Stewart) resided in U.S.A./P.E.1., died November 4 1981, interred at Kingsboro Prince Edward Island, in the East Point Baptist Church Cemetery. George died May 10, 1917, Portsmouth Virginia, interred at Kingsboro Prince Edward Island, in the East Point Baptist Church Cemetery.
George was a Tailor in the American Marine regiment stationed in Portsmouth. He died very suddenly, supposedly of a heart attack. This was never confirmed by an autopsy. Nettie had four small children and a baby on the way and felt that she had to return to Prince Edward Island.
