53. The Brick Block was the red brick store constructed by Stern brothers in 1902 next to the Matthew & McLean Store on Main Street. I replaced the massive four-story Prowse Bros. & Co. store which Pomed It was torn down in the early 1970's.

54. Souris. Three McKay brothers, Jack, Dan and Stan constructet carriages, sleighs, farm wagons and all kinds of vehicles in the formet James R. MacLean store (where the car wash is presently situated.

55. The fire at the Carlton Store was ona hot, windy, summer afternoot in 1937. The store was situated just east of the A M Auto Parts. The three-storey building was ignited by a brush fire which broke out abou! 20 yards behind the store. Later, flames broke out in the residence 0 James Dunphy across the street and badly gutted the home before the fi was extinguished. A barn owned by Adrian MacInnis, a quarter of a mil away, was destroyed when ignited by flying embers. The Souris Creamery next door, was scorched. At one point, it was believed the whole ‘ow was in danger and assistance had to be sent for from Charlottetown. The building housed not only the store, but also the Masonic Lodge.

56. The third floor of the Souris High School, which was situated 0 Church Street. Tar paper screens were placed over the windows. A woo box filled with sand and metal was placed at the north end of the roo Since the school was not wired for electricity at the time, candles wer used to illuminate the targets. Small mattresses were used at the south end so the cadets could lie prone. Occasionally a stray bullet passed through the north window, but fortunately for the Department of National Defence, neither pedestrians nor teams of horses and their drivers interfered with the travelling of the odd piece of lead.

60. It was quarried at nearby St. Catherines. Nova Scotia freestoné was used in the windows and the doorways.

61. 150 feet. The fire started on Sunday night March 10, causing ¢ $75,000 loss. It was believed to have started in the furnace room.

64. Bernard Creamer’s mill was across from the old Morrow home, below MacKenzie’s forge on Breakwater Street. He constructed many altars for the Island Roman Catholic churches. Creamer also produced hardwood flooring.
