On this occasion, the only passengers to bourd the train at Colville wor. a two-year-old Holstein bull and myself. The bull obviously had a deep. prejudice against train travel, und strongly resented being removed from his home territory. He butted, kicked, plunged, and broke away momentarily, but was finally wrestled up the ramp and into the freight car. I scrambled aboard, found a seat next to a window -- in second class, naturally -- and surveyed with a fine air of sophistication the stay-at-homes who lounged about the platform as we pulled away. Our top speed was probably less than twenty miles an hour, but, to me, it was positively breath-taking. Upon | detraining at Charlottetown, I marched the few blocks to my boarding house, feeling, and trying to appear, like a man of no mean. worldly experience -- a veritable modern Marco Polo.

Many amusing anecdotes were told concerning the railway and of events relating to it. Most of them were, no doubt, quite exagzerated and wide of the truth, but the following incident actually took place in late 1911. A few weeks earlier, a Dominion election had been held to decide the issue of a proposed reciprocity treaty with the United States. It had resulted in th: defeat of the Liberal Government led by Sir Wilfrid Laurier. The Liberals, who had held the reins of power for the previous fifteen years, were wunder- astandably incensed at their overthrow. The Conservatives, on the other hand were exultant over their victory and, of course, missed no opportunity of needling the disgruntled Grits.

On this particular day, the morning train for Souris had just cleared the Charlottetown yard, and the conductor, a staunch Liberal, was busy collecting tickets and fares. A passenger from Mount Stewart, an ardent Conservative, was emphatically voicing his satisfaction with the | thrashing handed the Grits on etection day. For a space, the conductor held his peace, but, at some disparaging reference to Sir Wilfrid, his
