Cora Smallman 1934 Cora was born January 9, 1912, to parents Locksbie Dennis and Harriet (Wedlock) Dennis of Knutsford, P.E.I. She had two brothers and two sisters: Edwin, Wilbert, Elva and Blanche. She met and married Albert Horne Smallman of Knutsford on August 20, 1930. She worked side-by-side with her husband on the mixed farm, milking cows and growing potatoes. She grew a large garden and kept hens, selling the eggs in O’Leary to buy groceries. They were blessed with six children: Leila, Freda, Anita, Ken, Gwen and Garth. Cora was also a loving grandmother to 17 grandchildren. She was a hard worker with outside chores, her housework and looking after the children. However, she managed time for the Knutsford Women’s Institute, which she loved. The men would be in the kitchen talking and waiting for lunch to be served, while the women met in the parlor. Cora was always willing to serve on committees and help with projects. She served as president in 1934. The WI would do mending for the hospital, quilt for fundraisers, pack boxes for the War veterans, and participate in convener programs. Institute members were very dear to Cora and she happily worked for The Home and Country with the Knutsford Women’s Institute. She was a faithful member of the Springfield West O’Leary Baptist Church and took loving care of her husband in later years when his health was failing. Cora died May 1, 2001 at the age of 89 years. I don’t think she ever said an unkind word to or about anyone. Written by her daughter-in-law, Verna Smallman 19
