Fairley Yeo 1976-1980-2001-2004-2007 Fairley Dumville, born 1937, was the daughter of Margaret and Ben Dumville of West Cape,P.E.I. As a child, Fairley had fond memories of her mother attending the West Cape Women’s Institute with her many WI friends: actively hosting meetings, attending conferences, and providing extensive support to the West Cape community school. In 1956, Fairley married Alvin Yeo and together raised four children, Judith, Larry, Elizabeth, and Carolyn. She joined the family farm in Knutsford, P.E.I., coincidentally the home of several generations of avid WI women. Within one year, Fairley also became an active member of the Knutsford WI, where she has made many cherished friends, all developed by working together to strengthen and support their community. Over the past 60 + years, Fairley has had many opportunities for personal and professional development, involving working with WI at the local, provincial, and national levels. Her leadership roles have included: K WI president and other executive positions, as well as a member of the provincial board of directors for PEIF WI. Also, the first honorary Member of PEIWI. She has also chaired various community projects and fundraising initiatives, attended many national conferences, written government grants and proposals, and provided extensive outreach to the community, to name but a few. She became a lifetime member in 1980. Fairley believes strongly in the power of education and community involvement to transform the lives of individuals and their communities. Her belief in education is exhibited by the completion of a Diploma in Adult Education, St. Francis Xavier University followed by a Bachelor of Integrated Studies from UPEI, both in 2005. All were completed through part-time studies while also volunteering and working with Statistics Canada as a research field interviewer, and first and foremost being a wife and mother. The value of friendship and community service is demonstrated by the many creative and engaging institute projects Fairley and members of the K WI initiated, all which have provided opportunities for individuals and families to work together!
