The Knutsford WI recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. Vera Smallman MacArthur Feb. 24, 1908-Feb. 14, 2006 The members of the Knutsford Women’s Institute are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of their last charter member, Vera Smallman MacArthur on February 14, 2006. Vera was instrumental in the forming of the Knutsford WI. The first meeting was held at her home in December 1928. She was born on February 24, 1908, the daughter of Hon. Forrest and Gertrude Phillips. She married Beecher Smallman and settled on the family farm. | Together they carried on a successful farming operation. They had one son, Herman. After the death of her first husband Beecher, she later married Joshua MacArthur and moved to Poplar Grove where she became a valued member of the Poplar Grove WI. Vera’s handiwork and cooking won her many prizes and awards at exhibitions. A wonderful friend and neighbour, she was always ready to lend a helping hand. Her pleasing and gracious manner will be remembered by all who knew her. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by her family and friends. 53
