A sewing club was started by Mrs. Betty Thompson and Miss Evelyn Gay, who volunteered to

be leaders.

A joyous welcome home party was held February 21, 1946, for the boys/men returning home from taking part in the victory.

This party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Smallman.

The house was appropriately decorated for the occasion with flags and bunting. The honoured guests were: Pte. Douglas Adams, Pte. Earle Adams, Pte. Leaman Harris, Pte. Howard Lidstone, Pte. Keith Lidstone, Pte. Albert Elliott. Others honoured but not present were Gordon Harris, Pte. Elmer Gallant, Cpl. George Harris,

Each soldier thanked the people for their kindness in sending parcels to them while overseas, and

for the gifts. A song, “For They are Jolly Good Fellows” was then sung.

The following address, written by Mrs. Dan Smallman of the Knutsford, Women’s Institute is as

follows:

Dear Boys:

This is indeed a joyous occasion when we, your relatives, and friends, gather here tonight to welcome you home and pay tribute to you, the young men of our community who answered your country’s call, left home and loved ones and went forth to give your lives, if need be, that we

might have freedom and peace.

We rejoice that God willed that so many of you have been spared to return and we extend our

heartfelt sympathy to those who mourn the loss of ones who made the supreme sacrifice.

We marvel that through your many and varied experiences intensified far beyond our imagination, you have returned physically fit and bearing very few scars of such a cruel war. You, with other allied heroes, have fought a good fight and we, therefore, owe a debt of gratitude which we can never repay. It is, therefore fitting that we express to each one of you personally

our thanks, our gratitude, and good wishes.
