In May 1978, the regular institute meeting took place at the school and was hosted by Helen Adams. Correspondence was read and dealt with. Empress McDowell reported that the Colonial quilt sold for $80 and two more quilts were on hand to be completed whenever convenient for
members.
It was moved by Silver Dennis and seconded by Wanda Adams that the school committee have the authority to hire a Young Canada Works student and also to have several or all students attend P.E.I. Heritage Workshop, May 30-31 for researching and writing community history. Mrs. Lillian Adams and Mrs. Eileen Smallman were appointed delegates to attend the annual convention in Charlottetown on June 2. Convention resolutions were read and discussed. $54 was received for meals served at the election poll. The entertainment committee reported games night being well attended and enjoyed by all. The Pennies for Friendship box arrived. Meeting
closed with Orell Smallman reading a poem called Memories of P.E.I.
The June meeting was held at the school and hosted by Susie Smallman. The Mary Stewart Collect was repeated and roll call was answered by members saying what their favourite flower
was.
The school committee reported looking into purchasing two tables and 25 chairs, but none were available for several weeks. A sink for the kitchen was required and discussed. Members
decided to look into buying a new sink after the cupboards were installed. Lilly Adams brought home an informative report from the annual convention in Charlottetown. It was moved and discussed that she received $10 for her expenses. Eileen Smallman thanked all those who helped out picking up garbage on Cleanup day. She also read the History of the Hospital Aid of O’Leary. It was reported that a thrift shop would be open soon. It was decided that the members set up tables for the Celebrity Dinner. Members discussed opening the school for a craft centre. It concluded that the K WI wait to see if people in the district were interested. Finally, Lorraine
Harris and Eileen Smallman were to look into having parking in front of the school.
The Young Canada Works project was approved for four students for eight weeks from June 19 to August 11. Those hired were Marcia Smallman as project manager, along with Kathy Smallman, Kathleen Woodside and Melita Harris. Objectives are to provide recreational,
historical research and maintenance program for the Community of Knutsford.
