1988

In January of 1979, the Knutsford Women’s Institute met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Claire MacNeill. The school did not have heat, so the ladies decided to have the regular meeting at their homes once more until the weather warmed up. The government proclaimed 1979 to be the Year of the Child. It was moved and seconded to increase the insurance of the school to $4,000. It

was also agreed that $65 be charged for a quilt and $25 for quilting. They also decided to remove the black board but to keep part of it to use when needed. President Orell Smallman suggested having another meeting January 22 to discuss the program for the year. Members were appointed

and given the dates they would volunteer at the rink canteen.

Next meeting will be held at the Regional Services Centre February 14. Program for the meeting was a reading called New Year by Silver Dennis. A Prayer for the New Year was recited by Lorraine Harris, as well as the Old Rocking Chair and Little Boy by Lilly Adams. A contest involving the emblems and flowers of the provinces of Canada was put on by Lorraine Harris.

Meeting closed with all the members singing Auld Lang Syne.

The February meeting of the KWI was held at the West Prince Regional Services Centre. Roll call was answered by 15 members. Minutes of previous meetings were read and approved. Devotion was read by Eileen Smallman (Corinthians: Judge not according to appearance we should be like sweet clover and have a useful life.) Correspondence was read and dealt with, and a report was given on catering to the Winter Carnival Tea. Members were appointed to tend to the canteen at the rink for March and the sick committee reported sending a rose bowl to Barbara Sweet. It was moved by Fairley Yeo and seconded by Silver Dennis that all members bring an item for the P.E.I. Family Services Bureau next meeting. An application was put forward to the Charlottetown Young Canada Works. Pennies for Friendship was passed around, amounting to 60 cents. Program was a film on food and agriculture conducted by Leona Maclssac. Orell Smallman thanked Leona on behalf of herself and the institute members. The meeting adjourned

with the Ode and a lunch was served by the committee in charge.
