roof tarred, and they now had tap water. Many gifts were sent to the Hillsborough Hospital and
every May they took part in the Roadside Cleanup. Every year they canvassed for cancer.
In 1984 the Institutes News was passed around the meeting table. There were notes and news concerning- Red Cross, P.E.I. Rape and Sexual Assault Centre, From Farm to Table on Wheels. The Provincial Exhibition prize list was included in the mailing. Tentative plans were made to entertain the Farm to Table on Wheels on March 14th at the Resource Centre. Alden Weeks sent
a letter thanking the institute for their interest in buying braille books for use in the school.
It was moved by Fairley Yeo and seconded by Joan Smallman that the school hold ceramic
classes under the supervision of the Knutsford institute. Wanda Adams gave a very informative slide show presentation on breast cancer for the program.
Following the fellowship of the quilting bee, the institute had their regular monthly meeting during the afternoon, February 9, at the Corinthian Housing Complex. Roll call was answered by 15 members and four visitors. The correspondence consisted of the usual Notes and News and included items for the membership committee, provincial exhibition chairman, cancer society, alcohol and drug problems, Keep Island Kids Straight, mental health, and a reminder that the district conventions are to be over by April 13. The Woman of the Year Award applications were also to be sent in by February 13. Eileen Smallman presented a paper from the provincial convener of citizenship and legislation. Lorraine Harris, under the umbrella of convener of United Nations, presented a great program on Acid Rain and answered many questions
concerning the sensitive and controversial subject.
In 1985, greetings were received from Rose Knight from the twin women’s Institute in British
Columbia.
A note was read thanking the institute for the use of the school for the ceramic course. Another letter thanked the members for helping with chowder supper for the Community Hospital Aid. Empress McDowell and Myrtle MacWilliams shared with the meeting their pleasant afternoon at the public library during Heritage Week. Lorne and Elga Collicutt donated a clock in appreciation for use of the school for a shower. The institute was invited to attend Hernewood Jr. High School during Artisan Week April 27 to demonstrate a craft. The purpose was to bridge
the gap between the generations.
