government in lieu of taxes for 1985. This came as a great surprise, especially because the

members had decided not to apply for the grant the following year.

During the September annual meeting, the members decided that the price for quilts now would be raised - $135 for a plain one but $150 for a fancy. A diamond and a leaf quilt were both ordered and would be considered fancy. The members were reminded that the PEIWI is sponsoring a Country Kitchen Christmas to be held in Knutsford, November 14, 1985. It was discussed that the water tank at the school be seen and the stove top repaired, and that the leak in

the roof to be fixed or replaced if need be. The Secretary’s Annual Report 1985

The Knutsford Women’s Institute experienced another good year. During the year, we held 12 regular monthly meetings, five in the school, one in candlelight, five more in member’s homes, and two in summer residences. They had two potluck suppers along with the annual anniversary dinner. We continue to make use of the program book and plan the year in advance. The average attendance at the meeting is 14-15. Susie Smallman recorded perfect attendance this fiscal year. Marion Luxton and Joan Smallman missed one meeting and Wanda Adams, Lorraine Harris, Empress McDowell, Elva Smallman, and Florence MacDougall were absent for two meetings. Our meetings begin with a meaningful devotional period, and the president began the meeting with a timely thought. All Notes and News are read aloud and the highlights from the periodicals presented. We continue to make use of the program library and find them generally good. We also had three guest speakers this year. Some members attended the Decorating Country Style. We again sponsored a member in the Lady Gem contest and were floored when she (Florence MacDougall) was chosen as one of the winners. The school continues to be one of our most ambitious projects. It just required general cleaning, and the lawn was kept cut on a volunteer basis. The Canadian flag waved proudly, several community showers were held, and the school is being used for ceramic classes. We participated in Roadside Cleanup and provided lunch for the 4-H. Some members participated in the Run for Light event. We supported the local hospital by working at the New to You thrift shop and helping with chowder supper, Christmas stocking, bake sale, mending, and providing and serving lunch at the local hospital meeting. We

canvassed the district in support of the Q.E.H. Lodge and cancer society. The monies were raised

mainly from lunch, roll call, ceramic class rent, quilts, and we were pleased receiving a
