speaker will be Hon. Muriel Masse. There will be a workshop for district officers at the Inn on the Hill February 4 in Charlottetown. The president and the secretary expressed interest in attending the workshop as they are part of the executive. Lorne Luxton sent a note of thanks for the present he received at Christmas from the institute. Meeting closed by singing the institute Ode.
Mrs. Christine MacKinnon made donations to the Water Safety program. The K WI donated $100 to the O’Leary Community Hospital for the mammogram equipment. $20 was donated to West Prince Music Festival and the Salvation Army and the Red Shield Appeal. A quilt and pillow were donated to the hospital by the institute. Two boxes were packed up for a needy family and an Easter box to be given to a family in need. Community Enhancement Committee reported community signs installed and 40 new mailboxes. The West Point Institute, their twin institute, visited Knutsford Institute and read their minutes from the past presidents of Island Women’s Institute. Geneva King spoke at the meeting and Jean Dewar showed slides of her trip to China. At another regular meeting in 1988, Charlie Morrison spoke on the Group Home in Mount
Royal.
In August, to commemorate Canada Day, Joan Smallman gave a reading recalling the Flag Debate which took place on the House of Commons. This reading had special significance as the story was written by Joan’s cousin, Richard MacDonald, who at the time was a columnist for
MacLean’s magazine and a journalism professor at Carlton University.
