Adams reported for the hospital committee that children’s slippers and adult socks are needed. It was decided once again to send Christmas cards to the seniors in the community. Sunshine Pal gifts were exchanged, and pals revealed, then chosen for another year. Joan Smallman read a story Where There is Love, and Helen Adams asked members to write a letter to Santa. A delicious lunch was served by the hostess and committee before everyone departed and wishing each other a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. At the November meeting in 1991, a letter was received from Patricia Mella, leader of the Progressive Conservative party, congratulating the institute for winning first prize for the cemetery improvement from the Rural Beautification Society. The winnings, a considerable sum of $500, would go far to help the community. Perhaps the 1991 and 1992 can be summarized by a well-documented secretary’s report written by Marion Luxton and Jean Harris. Secretary Report Sep. 1991-Sep. 1992 We have 19 members with an average attendance of 13. We regret the passing of two of our members. These members were presented with life membership pins and certificates. We held 10 meetings, one at the Service Centre, the remainder at our Community Centre or in our homes. In May, we enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner at the G and E Restaurant. Our conveners use the program packets from the branch offices. We participated in the Roadside Cleanup. We support the Hospital Aid, Adopted Child, White Gift, Music Festival, Red Cross Water Safety, Salvation Army and Pennies for Friendship. Donated Christmas favours for the hospital trays; sent Christmas cards to seniors in the district; collect for Heart and Cancer Funds and make up Sunshine boxes for hospital patients. We quilted and sold two quilts also two crib quilts for the hospital nursery. The blocks for these quilts were made and donated by the late Gladys MacWilliams. We also provide funds for the upkeep of our Community Centre. It is with regret the passing of two of our long serving life members of the K WI. Etta Harris, charter member who joined the KWI in 1928, passed away August 4, 1991 at the age 94. Elva Smallman, life member, joined a few months later in 1929 and passed away Jan/22 1993, age 79. “We cannot think of them as dead, who walk with us no more. Along the path of life we tread, they have but gone before.” - Frederick Lucian Hosmer, Holocaust survivor 148
