van left. We really had a fun day. I move to adopt this report, Lorraine Harris, secretary of Knutsford Women’s Institute. In April 1997, members of the KWI met at the home of Lorraine Harris for their regular monthly meeting. President Betty Sweet opened the meeting with a thought for the month: Our joys when extended will always increase, and our grief when divided are hushed into peace. The Mary Stewart Collect was repeated in unison. The devotional was conducted by Silver Dennis. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Roll call was answered by 12 members. The provincial convention is be held May 27 at the Rodd, $25 for registration fee. Orell Smallman reported that she purchased quilt material, and it was moved she be paid for it. Wanda Adams read her hospital aid report and thanked members for supporting the hospital bake sale. A report was given on the Area 2 convention which was held recently and was very well attended. Freda Woodside and Marion Luxton will represent K WI at the 1998 executive meeting. Members discussed painting the backs of district signs and cleaning the centre. They decided to telephone members May 1, before submitting their registration forms to the board office. The PEIWI will be celebrating its 84th Anniversary and Canada will be celebrating its 100th. Betty Sweet reported she had been contacted by Kevin Porter, representative of the Community Homes Work Club, asking to rent the centre for a tutoring class. But after some discussion, it was decided the centre did not have adequate facilities for winter rental. It would cost too much to heat the centre in winter. They were asked to help with a lunch for Dr. George Dewar’s political lecture. Five members volunteered to make sweets. The program for the night consisted of two videos on Pesticide Safety in Rural Homes and Gardens shown by Safety Convener Isobel Harris The Spirit of the Tree was shown by Cultural Affairs convenor Orell Smallman. They were both enjoyable and informative. In May, it was reported that the district signs were painted and put up for the summer by Lorne Luxton and Lorne Adams. They also repaired the attic window and installed the pump. Thank- you cards were sent to both gentlemen, in appreciation. Highlights from the K WI are as follows: Silver Dennis was awarded her 50-year membership award by Betty Sweet: a flea market and bake sale, featuring fresh vegetables, and a handmade quilt was held August 8 at the school. The quilt sold for $500. Dues were now $7 per year. Liability insurance was cancelled with one insurance agency and moved to another for a better 153
