2008 In September 1998, it was reported that a Women’s Institute workshop was to be held at the Tyne Valley Britannia Hall on Tuesday, September 29. The topic was Pros and Cons of hormone replacement. All WI members are urged to attend. In October, a letter was received from the Rural Beautification Society stating the K WI were the prize winner for 1998. The banquet would be held October 21 at the CP hotel in Charlottetown. President Betty Sweet was unable to attend, as her plans had already been set to visit family in Calgary. It was then decided that secretary Fairley Yeo and treasurer Joan Smallman attend and WI would purchase another ticket. There was a discussion on a literary video which had been passed from member to member to watch in their homes. It said that 48% of the population in Canada could not read, with 40% of people in rural P.E.I being unable to read well enough to function effectively in society. The members decided to ask Melissa Keenan to come to their meeting to speak on the role of learning centres in the area. Hospital aid committee, Freda Woodside, gave a report on the potluck supper at the last meeting. Plaques were presented by Life Line System representative to auxiliary for outstanding service and commitment for 10 years. A plaque was given to President, Debbie Gorrill and CEO Lewis MacKenzie for installing and repairing Life Line. A plaque was also given to Marjorie McCaul, the New to You financial planner. There was a lively report on a stretcher for the hospital, $4,000, scales $270, and new life lines installed. Red Cross convener Betty Sweet will look in to repairs for Personal Floating Devices (PFD) for swimming lessons. Verna Smallman gave an interesting program on crime prevention. Jean Harris brought an old object to the meeting and members had a hard time guessing what it was. Not many hat pins used in 1998. It was decided to hold their institute’s 70" Anniversary November 5" at the school with a hot turkey dinner for members only. They decided to ask the Provincial WI board to have a representative present to bring greetings. They would invite charter member Vera Smallman MacArthur, at whose home the first Knutsford WI meeting was held, and present corsages to both Vera and Cora who could not attend. Orell Smallman volunteered to cook the turkey. All other members would bring an item for the supper. Fairley Yeo and Joan Smallman attended the Rural Beautification Society awards banquet at the CP hotel in Charlottetown. It was decided to write a letter to O’ Leary Town Council to update them on the community success and give $150 prize money to the cemetery committee. A vote 155
