postponed due the passing of a beloved relative and friend to the community, Iva Sweet. President Betty Sweet thanked the hostesses, Frank and Barbara Sweet, for letting the group gather there on a snowy afternoon. Business arising from previous meeting included the presentation of an award for 60 years of service to be given to Helen Adams and 50 years of service to Lorraine Harris. It was decided that President Betty Sweet would visit Lorraine at their convenience to make the presentation. Betty Sweet phoned provincial WI regarding the district convention for programs and agenda. She was advised to proceed as usual. It will be held March 23 at the Community Centre Fire Hall in O’Leary. Wanda Adams will pick up secretaries’ record book from Carol Collicutt. A lengthy discussion was had on Heart Health. It was thought it would make a good resolution to be put forth at the convention. It was then learned that member Fairley Yeo would be involved in presenting Healthy Living workshops, but not in time for conventions. All work under Island Community Fund was completed and paid for. A wedding shower was held at the Community Centre. The June 8 regular meeting was held at the G&E Restaurant for what would become an annual meeting. Twelve members attended and were pleased to have Helen Adams and Freda Woodside after a long absence. Prior to the meeting, Helen Adams had been presented with her long-time service awards from the provincial board members. Betty Sweet announced the presentation, made by Joan Smallman. Joan welcomed and thanked Helen for coming and recounted the contributions Helen had made to the K WI and the community. Helen thanked everyone and photos were taken. Empress McDowell then invited everyone to her home for a regular meeting. Lorraine Harris reported that Gail Shea had been appointed Revenue minister. Flyers have been circulated in the community to inform people that the district has been entered in the Rural Beautification Contest. The application for funding from Community Fund was approved and Janet Smith has been hired for the summer. Later, a job description was written up and it was decided to pay her minimum wage. A second flyer was suggested by Fairley Yeo to ask the community for help with the school project. The objective was to raise $3,000 for the KWI’s half. After reading one of the flyers, an employee of the Bank of Nova Scotia, Edna Gallant, made an application to match any cash received by the KWI. A bake sale was held inside the Bank of Nova Scotia. The food sold quickly and there was also a canopy set up outside with more baked goods. The bank matched their amount, raising over $3,000 for the K WI. Afterwards, the members were called to have a photo taken at the O’Leary Legion in recognition 165
