Thanks to Jeffrey Smallman for putting up the flag at Community Centre before Canada Day. The district entered in Rural Beautification Competition. At the annual meeting in September Verna Smallman presented the following slate of officers: president — Joan Smallman; vice president- Fairley Yeo; secretary- Betty Sweet; treasurer -Barbara Sweet. A wedding shower was held at the school for David Smallman and his fiancé. Support from the community had once again been generous, because the KWI won $500 in the Rural Beautification Competition for the district. The Purple Ribbon Campaign was initiated by the Women’s Action Coalition of Nova Scotia in memory of the 14 women killed in Montreal, December 6, 1989 just because they were women. The purple ribbon is most commonly used to raise awareness for domestic violence; it is also used to bring awareness to survivors of gender-based violence, animal abuse, Alzheimer’s, Lupus, Chrohns, sarcoidosis disease and pancreatic cancer. A donation was made to Caring Cupboard and donations of teddy bears were made to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, MADD. A Christmas basket was packed full for a former member, Marion Luxton, and her husband, Lorne, who were ill. Also, a donation was given to QEH for Friends for Life Campaign. A cash donation of $250 was made to the KWI from Dr. Margaret Ann Woodside. In January 2012, the regular meeting was held at the home of Fairley and Alvin Yeo. President Betty Sweet opened the meeting by thanking the hostess and welcoming the visitors, Karen Spencer, Leah Harris, Susan Smallman, and Lillian Harris. Devotional was led by Verna Smallman based on living our best life as Jesus would want in preparing for His coming. Roll call was answered by a donation to Caring Cupboard. Visiting committee, Wanda Adams and Orell Smallman, reported they visited two members, Freda Woodside and Helen Adams. Verna and Joan will meet at Betty’s to plan the program books for the year. Joan gave an interesting reading titled New is Old. Karen Spencer told a very humorous story involving a squirrel that entered her house. Moral of the story - look before you sit. Fairley Yeo introduced guest speaker Margaret Sweet who spoke on being a social worker in the Northern Baffin Island. She also displayed some Inuit art. Joan thanked her.
