At the regular February KWI meeting, Cultural Affairs convenor Orell Smallman gave an interesting report on heritage places in P.E.I. including the Elmira Railway Station, Orwell Corner Museum, Beaconsfield and Carriage House, Green Park, O’Leary Potato Museum, Acadian Museum, Alberton Museum and Eptek Centre, at her home where this month is meeting took place. Lorraine Harris, International Affairs Convener, reported on the completion of the barrier to protect West Point Lighthouse from storm surges, and the Stanley Cup’s visit to O’Leary. The hospital committee, led by Wanda Adams, reported palliative care rooms at the O’Leary Community Hospital are nearly completed. A discussion was had regarding the district convention. Verna and Barbara Sweet attended a planning meeting. The convention will be held March 4, storm date March 12. KWI is responsible for guest speaker, registration and hospitality. Fairley Yeo will contact guest speaker. Barbara Sweet will be in charge of registration and picking up key to Community Centre. Members will assemble at 5 p.m. to set up tables. Meeting closed with everyone repeating the Mispah and WI Grace. Homemade ice-cream made by Orell Smallman was served to the members by the committee in charge. In March, the KWI regular meeting was held at the home of Eileen and Arnold Smallman. In the absence of president, Joan Smallman, vice president, Fairley Yeo opened the meeting. She thanked the hosts for opening their home to the members. Then she read a newspaper clipping from 1951, an account of the Knutsford Eagles winning a hockey championship in Mount Pleasant rink. There were a lot of familiar faces in the photograph of the players. Betty Sweet read the devotional, which was based on Matthew 28 verses 19-20. Empress McDowell read two humorous readings and Eileen Smallman gave a reading which brought back memories of a one-room schoolhouse. Three tickets were purchased for the Spring in the Air Gala Dinner, one each for the president, secretary, and treasurer. The April meeting was held at the home of Ken and Verna Smallman. Empress McDowell gave the devotional with the theme ‘As Imperfect as we are, we are all God’s Children’. It was decided to send two members to the provincial convention at Slemon Park on June 16.
