The May meeting was hosted by the president, Joan Smallman, at the KWI community centre. She opened the meeting with a reading Mother’s Love is like a Circle. The Mary Stewart collect was repeated in unison. Roll call was answered with 13 members giving an item for the silent auction. The centre had been cleaned and the grass had been cut for the first time that year. Flower beds were cleaned up and flowers will be planted in June. The filing cabinet had been
updated. Joan Smallman, Karen Spencer and Betty Sweet will attend the WI convention.
Joan and Barbara Sweet and Betty Sweet attended the Spring is in the Air Gala Dinner at the Culinary Institute in Charlottetown. They reported that they had a delicious meal and interesting conversations with other WI members. There was a lengthy discussion on asking the Department of Highways to take down the highway signs as they are taking away from the welcome signs. Wanda Adams reported from the Community Hospital that it was very hard to get volunteers to run the New to You shop. MLA Robert Henderson is working hard to get an EDA worker for the Palliative Care unit to open soon. Lovely rooms and furniture. Road Cleanup is May 12 and there was a discussion on the Ambassador Competition with the P.E.I. Potato Blossom Festival. Lorraine Harris gave a program on the advantages of tap water versus bottled water. Bottles are expensive and plastic is filling our landfills. Tap water is free and the provincial municipal
regulations keep water tested to purify.
Verna Smallman presented a program on hearing loss. Farmers have hearing loss by the age of 30 due to work-related noise from machinery. Hearing is the next most important sense we have after eyesight. Fairley Yeo reported that the cancer canvass had been very successful in Knutsford and the surrounding community. members for raising $828.
Members of the KWI enjoyed their annual outing/ meeting at the G&E restaurant and afterward conducted the meeting at the home of Empress McDowell at the Corinthian Home. Ten members answered roll call with a donation of plants for the community centre. Wanda Adams, hospital
