President — vacant; vice President — Fairley Yeo; secretary — Betty Sweet; treasurer — Barbara Sweet. In October, Orell Smallman took over the vacant position of president. Eileen Smallman gave a reading called Autumn time Halloween time and another reading called Grandma’s Apron. Barbara Sweet was absent as she was hard at work during the potato harvest. It was decided not to have a Halloween party in response to a letter sent from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. It was moved by Joan and seconded by Fairley that $100 be donated to the hospital equipment fund. Gifts were brought to the hospital by committee members for sister member Empress McDowell. Hospital committee reported that fundraising for the new X-ray machine will begin soon. The government gave $165,000 toward its purchase. The auxiliary donated $5,000 for an air conditioning in the palliative care unit. On November 28, 2013, members of the K WI gathered at the G&E Restaurant to celebrate a most important occasion, their 85th anniversary. It was the very same night their founding members had met at the Knutsford school and organized their first meeting. Thus began 85 years of service of the KWI. President Orell Smallman welcomed the provincial board institute vice president, Carol Connick, president elect, Jaquie Laird, Carol MacLellen, executive officer to Federated Women’s Institute of Canada, and guest Edna Gallant. During the course of the meal, Edna explained that on behalf of the Scotia Bank she had nominated the KWI for a volunteer community service award. She was happy to congratulate the institute on winning and presented treasurer Barbara Sweet with a cheque for $1,000. Following the meal, members and guests proceeded to the Corinthian Home where Empress McDowell welcomed everyone. Wanda Adams read the minutes of the first meeting held in November 28, 1928. Wanda noted that the school would have been heated by a wood stove and light would have come by oil lamps. She also said a person involved with the Women’s Institute provincial board member came from Charlottetown and she wondered what mode of transportation she used. Most likely the train, everyone agreed. Fairley welcomed provincial board member president-elect Jaquie Laird who presented fifty-year membership certificates to Isobel Harris, Lorraine Harris, and Verna Smallman. She also presented president, Orell Smallman a certificate commemorating the KWI’s 85-year anniversary. A memorial for departed members was conducted by Joan Smallman. White roses were placed by Barbara Sweet and Orell Smallman lit a candle. Silver Dennis and Empress McDowell cut the anniversary cake, while Carol MacLellan brought greetings for the 173
