Verna Smallman introduced guest speaker Mary Quigley at the March regular KWI meeting, held at the home of Susan and Garth Smallman. Mary’s topic concerned the negative aspects of refined sugar. She said that sugar caused inflammation in bodies and processed food causes metabolism to work overtime. Refined sugar, she said, has no nutrients so it pulls good nutrients from the body by borrowing from healthy cells. An average person consumes 130 pounds of sugar per year. Sugar addiction is like cocaine, sugar numbs pain like morphine. She suggested to eat something far better, like good dark chocolate which has antioxidants present. President Orell Smallman thanked Mary Quigley on behalf of the institute and asked if she would consider presenting another program in the future. A memorial of $25 to the Knutsford Community Centre was given in memory of Silver Dennis from Nadine and Dale Dennis. Heath Woodside sent a thank you card and a donation of $100. Susan Smallman was put in charge of having their Heritage award framed. Fairley and Alvin Yeo were donating their cottage for the ninth year to raise money at the Spring is in the Air Gala dinner auction. The New Horizons grant was approved and $25,000 was given for improvements for the sewage, bathroom and kitchen. Free CPR training is being offered to all WI branches in April and May. It will involve 60—90-minute sessions. It was moved by Betty Sweet and seconded by Joan Smallman that the KWI contact Jennifer Delong by March 10 and register members and asked if the Food Service Safety course must be renewed each year. Fairley has the certificate. Meeting was adjourned and fellowship

The April regular meeting was held at Orell Smallman’s home. The devotion was given by Joan Smallman. It was a poem by Nova Scotia musician Dave Gunning, called These Hands co- written by George Canyon of New Brunswick. It was awarded the 2013 Song of the Year at the East Coast Music Awards. Empress McDowell had a few very funny jokes and a reading by an eight-year-old boy called White Lie. Orell, Betty and Fairley will attend Spring is in the Air Gala Dinner Friday, April 15. The yard sale and provincial convention takes place on the same day.
