Orell Smallman hosted the regular KWI in May at her home. She also read a poem called My face in the Mirror. Joan Smallman conducted the devotion called Life is Like a Patchwork Puzzle. The convener program was presented by Wanda Adams and Betty Sweet on echo- friendly cleaning products with 23 chemical free recipes. Citizenship and Legislation convener Betty Sweet read a news item about MP Wayne Easter and Senator Diane Griffin who both introduced bills to recognize Charlottetown, P.E.I. as the province and birthplace of Confederation. This happened after New Brunswick revealed its slogan for the Canada 150 celebration which said on a T-shirt “Celebrate where it all began.” New Brunswick’s tourism minister said it was his province’s then Lieutenant Governor Arthur Hamilton who suggested in 1865 a meeting in Fredericton take place. But eventually it was held in Charlottetown. Ames said New Brunswickers and Maritimers should all be proud all three provinces contributed to the original movement. Griffin believed her bill, along with Easter’s private member’s bill, would hold more weight when it went to the House of Commons. Correspondence included a thank you note from O’Leary Elementary School for the $87.00 for their breakfast program. The student in the health program to receive the $1,000 bursary was Kelsey Corcoran. There was a lengthy discussion on what would be included in the basket to be given to the Spring is in the Air Gala Dinner silent and live auction fundraiser. Everyone enjoyed social time afterwards, eating Orell’s
homemade ice-cream around her dining room table.
In April, the KWI meeting was held at Susan and Garth Smallman’s house. Wanda Adams presented humorous readings, Grandma’s Apron, had many uses in days gone by. In one, the husband thought he would die that day but he got through it. The wife told him it was her worst day ever. The mailman dropped dead on their veranda that morning. The 100 km yard sale was to be held May 27. The Knutsford Community Centre will be registered for a $10 fee on the map of O’Leary. There were to be tables for anyone in the community and a bake sale will be held. Hospital Committee reported that auxiliary is to buy two lifts. Andrew Ramsay, project manager, gets deals when buying more mattresses in bulk. Another RN will be hired soon for O’Leary
hospital. School committee reported that school needed to be cleaned before May 6 for a shower
