Before the regular KWI meeting in June at the Corinthian Home with Empress McDowell as hostess, everyone gathered for their annual outing at the G&E Restaurant for a meal. Betty Sweet presented the Citizenship and Legislation convener program titled Women Since Confederation 1867. Many of the names were familiar to the ladies, therefore, the quiz was answered well. The five members who attended the convention at Credit Union Place reported that some of the highlights were mental health panel discussion; Sharing your Island: day trips and staycations; (example, every WI could share great places to see and enjoy in their area, to help promote tourism). Also, a membership drive - whichever institute has the most recruits by November will receive $100. But the highlight for the KWI was seeing their president, Orell Smallman, one of their most deserving members, receive the Adelaide Hoodless Award of Honour for P.E.I. Orell thanked the members of the WI for nominating her for the award. She was very surprised, especially when she turned to see her family members in attendance. Best wishes were given, and photos were taken. $110 was donated by Empress McDowell’s family for the use of the centre for a family gathering. She has five generations, six ways. In preparation for the festival, Wayne Arsenault painted the outside of the building and the trim. Anne Dougay painted the storage and washrooms and the back and front steps. Ralph MacNeill and family cleaned the flies out of ceiling lights. Everything looks great and is ready for the Festival of Small Halls. A special KWI meeting was held in July to discuss Canada 150 celebration and other items. Kevin Adams will begin the ramp August |. Fairley Yeo read emails to and from Boyd Beck. She expressed concern and well wishes to him on his failing health. He said it would be fine if Carter Jeffery and Henry Dunsmore could take over the project of the 5th panel. Boyd Beck died shortly after the meeting. The members were very saddened as Boyd was invaluable in creating the historical panels. Shirlene O’Brien will meet with Carter and give him the pictures she has. The members want to have their oldest member, Empress McDowell at the 150 Canada Celebration Tea. Her grandson, Carter Jeffery is now helping with the panel project, and he is also working on six lines of five generations of Empress McDowell’s family. The K WI is hoping he can do a collage of all of them. The institute plans to sell tickets to the 150 Celebration at $10 each. The plan is to have two seating’s for the reception. The tentative date is September 16, 2-3 p.m. for first seating and 3- 4 p.m. for official opening and presentations and second seating. It was suggested to rent a tent for the entertainment and festivities. A few names came forward to entertain: Carine’s group, Larry Yeo and Barstool Conspiracy, Claudette Getson, Kenny 197
