The New Year KWI regular meeting was held January 10 at Wanda Adam’s house. Fairley Yeo led the devotional. In honour of the departed member, Empress McDowell she read a Hymn To a Good Woman Proverbs 31: 10-31 which describe Empress very well. The scripture passage was read at her recent funeral. Wanda Adams conducted the program consisting of poems, Clean out the Cupboards, New Year poem, and Good for what Ails You. There was also a contest on places in P.E.I. which exercised their brains. Pennies for Friendship and a New Year resolution were given by the seven members who answered roll call. Wanda treated the ladies to candy and fudge, minutes were read and approved. No word on donated computers. A discussion was had on whether they would host the Festival of Small Halls in 2018. Wanda Adams moved that the community centre be part of the Small Halls Festival in the summer event and Susan Smallman seconded it. Motion carried. Carter Jeffery is working on the last panel to be installed in the Community Centre. The New to You has had a good house cleaning and it is making it easier for people to shop. It was moved by Isobel Harris and seconded by Verna Smallman that Wanda Adams be on phone committee. Betty Sweet wrote a thank you note to the Bank of Nova Scotia for matching the tickets for the Celebration Tea. Then the meeting closed with singing Auld Lang Syne and repeating the Institute Grace. A special meeting was held January 11 at Orell Smallman’s home to fill in the program books for the new year 2018-19. Members present were Susan, Orell, Joan and Verna Smallman, Barbara and Betty Sweet and Fairley Yeo. A discussion was had on a guest speaker for the upcoming convention in February 21. Margaret Duffy Landry, manager of West Prince Health Centre, spoke on services offered at O’Leary and Alberton hospitals. There was also a discussion on fees for entertainers to play for events, Santa Clause and Tommy Smallman caretaker of cemetery, all will be paid $20. Will pay $50 for deceased members for memorial at cemetery fund. Sick members in hospital: card, chocolate, candy valued at $20. Sick members at home: card and cookies and visit. Benefits for someone in community will be discussed at the time of need and will be decided. Isobel missed Orell’s homemade ice-cream again. Another special meeting was held February 6 at president Orell Smallman’s, again with the executive present. A New Horizon grant evaluation report was needed to send into Ellen Rennie.
