A motion was made by Joan Smallman and seconded by Isobel Harris that Betty Sweet be treasurer and Orell Smallman be vice president. They graciously accepted. Fairley Yeo received notice that the KWI had been approved for the Seniors’ Secretariat Grant. They were awarded $2,500 to be used to hire someone to write the history of the K WI, to hire instructor Megan Ellis to teach yoga for seniors, and educational speakers at the community centre. Notes and News highlighted mask project, Helen Herring scholarship and Institute Memorial edition. The convention October 17, at the Rodd Royalty in Charlottetown, with one person only allowed from each WI to attend due to Covid 19. Agriculture convener Fairley Yeo read two papers on land survey and Department of Agriculture studying land use. P.E.I. is the only province where
deep wells are not allowed for irrigation. Climate change has given us hotter weather.
A special meeting was held on September 15. Orell, Verna, Fairley attended to discuss yoga and history etc. Yoga will be held October 19, and once a week on Mondays until November 9. Megan Ellis, instructor, will allow 10 people in the room. Will advertise in the West Prince Graphic but there might be 10 people interested in the community already. One person is needed to write the history of the KWI. Fairley will contact Margaret Sweet, and Debbie Horne and Verna will ask Janet Sentner. There also was a discussion on Christmas concert, crafts, knitting, and crocheting. In October, yoga instructor Megan Ellis couldn’t make first class so Ashton Smallman led the class. Ten people attended and before the first classes started, Larry Yeo put purple tape on the floor to help people stay in their required social six feet distance apart. Citizenship and Legislative convener Betty Sweet reported seeing a documentary on the Front de liberation du Quebec, (FLQ) an uprising in Quebec in 1970. The FLQ wanted to separate from
Canada.
In November the K WI regular meeting was held at the home of Orell Smallman. Betty Sweet introduced guest speaker Sally Lockhart, a committee member working towards a community care facility for O’ Leary, a not-for-profit cooperative home for seniors. She said a program was available for Canada Mortgage Housing Care and having the province on board will guarantee
the loan. Ernie Hudson, Conservative MLA said other money will be found by end of November.
