WOMANS' AUXILIARY, ST. PAULS' CHARLOTTETOWN A Branch of the Womana' Auxiliary to the Boatd of Domestic and Foreign Missions of the Church of England was organized in St. Pauls', October 10, 1898 (and I shall deal with its growth later)'. For over 60 years the Indian Residential Schools in Canada were financed by the Church of England in Canada and the 'Kingdom, The W,A,'s across the country clothed and supplied bedding for these children. This is &hy you read in old records "bale sent to Gordon School, etc,). Briefly this Society was known as St, Pauls' Missionary Society (1901-08), In 1908 it was re-organized as a Woman's Auxiliary, By 1957 the W',A~, was in full swing - 5 Senior Branches ( Branch A, Branch Bt Evening Branch , Belvedere Branch and Young Wives Branch ) - also, G,A ,'s, and J ',A,'s and Little Helpers, plus the Chancel Guild and the Parish Guild', We were organized from the Cradle to the Grave, In 1966 we stopped being the Woman's Auxiliary of the Anglican Church of Canada and became Anglie an Church Women , and at about this time the many (too many) organizations seemed to disintegrate - no G,A,'s, J,A ,'s or Little Helpers, and membership of the Senior Branches falling off. So, 1972 our Province's Centennial Year and the 75th Anniversary of our former W,A , incP, E ,I, saw the phasing out of our National Board (in Toronto ), and the integration of A, C,W , into the mainstream of the life of the Church, I should mention the Fledge money because as the years went by and the number of W,A ,'s in St, Pauls' grew (especially 1951-1972, we were sending ,fn the vicinity of $1,000,00 per year, out of the Province for missionary work from the women. Now muIt iply the number of Anglican Churches across Canada (the size of St. Pauls') by 1,000 and you will have an idea of the amount of money co tlected by women for missionary purposes. The Clergy were upset and in retrospect we see this money perhaps, should have gone through the Church, Unfortunately it was the recipients who suffered, because the younger women of the Church do not give to Missions, They do Parish work and only the one existing Branch of St, Pauls' sends a few hundred dollars for Missionary Work - via Church Head Office, • To put it plainly - the women had control of too much money - henceforth our Pledge money (now called - fair share) and other missionary donations, go to the Church head Office, and not to a W.A. Board ', *fi-a>*- ■I (t.)
