Seventieth Anniversary

St. James' Anglican Church Women Port Hill, P. E. I.

1984

The members.of St. James' Anglican Church Women welcome the Board of Prince Edward Island Anglican Church Women and sister members to this semi—annual. This is an important day in our history.

Our Women's Auxiliary, as it was first called, was organized by our first president, the rector's wife, Mrs. J. J. Bamford, in the fateful year of 1914. The first meeting was held in the parlor of the old Rectory on Cooper's Lane, so named after our first resident minister. The Rectory is now owned and being restored by Rev. John Montgomery who served this parish from 1974-1977. It has been the custom ever since to meet on the first Wednesday of each month.

In the same year, the Junior Women's Auxiliary was formed with Miss Mary Adams as superintendent and Miss May Monkley as Secretary— Treasurer. I remember these girls entertaining the Senior Women's Auxiliary at a garden party at Mary's home.

The Senior's and Junior's held one of many goose suppers and bazaars in the first and following years. After a time, the bazaar had to be discontinued as all the room was needed for the dinner tables. Later still, we stopped holding these suppers which had become too much to handle. Instead we still donate money each year called the "Goose Supper” donation.

. One effort of the Junior Women’s Auxiliary was the making of a bedspread. I think we charged 10¢ to have each name embroidered in

red.

Nine members of this group were made Life Members, and the only living member in our group is Mrs. Walter Newcombe.

Ten Diocesan Life Members were made by the Senior's. All these have passed on except Mrs. L. A. Dignan.
