Starting from the years 1810— 1812 the district was rapidly settled by people, who were, with few exceptions, of Highland Scottish origin. Among the clans represented were: - MacKay, Campbell, MacLean, Ferguson, MacQuarrie, HacDougall, MacNevin, Shaw, MacKinnon, and MacCalder. Other settlers were named Marchbank, Lane, Patrick, Beer, Creamer, Lam¬ bert, Marshall and Todd . Township or lot 29 which included DeSable , was first owned by Sir Charles Saunders , Admiral of the Royal Navy and, absentee landlord of England ; later in turn by Viecount Melville, Lord Elgin and Earl of Westmoreland . With the Straits cf Northumberland always in sight and offering a clear highway spring, summer, and fall, many of th© aettlers of this district, on their rare trips to Chariottetown or distant parts, went by water with row boat or sail, and considered them¬ selves fortunate compared to their inland neighbours.
