- 17 - the Church in what was called 'The Famine Year of 1837». There was a great scarcity of food at that time in the eastern part of the Province due to an early frost which destroyed the crops. When navigation opened up the following spring, boat loads of food, seed potatoes and grain sailed out of DeSable for delivery in area and other parts. The writer can well remembsr when all events of any concern in the life of the community; births, weddings, family troubles, years of pros¬ perity, seasons of want, times of joy, sorrow and death, were all remembered and dated by a remark* able system of working forward or backward to the year of a certain "Sable Sacrament". This Church stands today as it stood in the days of old, a testimony to generations of people who kept the faith of their fathers.
