In the late 1870's, the Inspector names the teacher, J. W. MacKenzie , of Strathaibyn ( Hartsville ) as1 a •most capable and outstanding gentleman and scholar'• His salary is listed at $200.00 yearly. This teacher was always remembered with great respect in the district and later became a minister of the Presbyterian Church. Attendance was heavy in the 80*s with school open every second Saturday. Average salary for the time:- Male Teacher forty-eight cents per day - Female Teacher thirty-five cents per day. HONOR ROLL - WORLD WAR I - At the call to arms in the First World War, Twelve men who had attended DeSable School as carefree boys, volunteered their services for King and Country and went overseas to far off battlefields. .>
