The Writer can remember as a boy listening to elderly men of an old generation talk deep in their beards of great horses of the past, - horses whose names, record, and the reputation of the stock
they aired on the Island, had become a by—word and
legend.
names such as - Island Chief, Brazilian, Flying Frenchman, and his stock which were ever known as 'The French Line', Abadella, Salidin, Hernando, Don- Juan, Black Pilot, and Sam Slick.
A later generation spoke of Commedone, Kickapoo, Tom
Medium, Huteood, Bronze Chief, and Dean Swift.
Many farmers owned one light driving horse for the
road; nearly all of them with great endurance and a number with considerable speed. Some yet of these local horsemen had specially built, racing or trott-
ing sleighs.¥
