INTRODUCTION
The Parish of Port Hill, one of nine Anglican parishes on Prince Edward Island, is located in Prince County and consists of the following three churches: St. James’ in Birch Hill, Lot 13; St. John’s in Ellerslie, Lot 12; and St. Peter’s in Foxley River, Lot ll. In 1948 St. Andrew’s Anglican Church was opened at Invemess, Lot 11. Built for the convenience of those members of St. Peter’s who lived a distance from their church, it remained open until the late 1960’s. It is now used as a day care centre.
Compiling the history of the Parish of Port Hill has been interesting and challenging. I began this work in May 1990 when I received from Roy Newcombe a bundle of Parish records in various forms: books of minutes, newspaper clippings, pictures, letters, bills, receipts, etc. As I began to organize these materials, I was initially apprehensive; however, the rewards of the endeavor have far outweighed any of the difficulties involved.
I regret having had limited time for additional research, particularly in chapter eight where I had little or no information on some of the clergy. The publication deadline also prevented the inclusion of material I had originally planned for the book. I have, nonetheless, attempted to provide as much of the Parish history as possible.
It will be noted that there are a number of quotations from Parish records. These were copied as closely as possible to the original. In instances where written work was either faded or illegible, I used my judgement in reproducing the material.
In spite of my efforts in compiling this history, omissions and inaccuracies may have
occurred. Any such errors are sincerely regretted and are unintentional.
