3. ST. JAMES'

The new St. James’ Church, directly across the road from Old St. James’, was completed in 1885. Three years earlier, Thomas H. Pope, John Maynard, Jr., and Thomas Adams had been appointed to procure plans and specifications for the new church. A year later these plans were approved and at a meeting on March 26, 1883,

it was further moved by Hon. John Yeo and seconded by Mr. Adams and carried unanimously that a committee of nine be appointed to undertake the building of the new church. The following were then elected on said committee: Thos. H. Pope, Chairman, Henry Newcombe, Thomas Birch, John Maynard Sr., Frances Dougherty, John Richard, Thos. Adams, John Maynard Jr., and George

Monkley.

Land for the new structure was purchased from Herbert Yeo at a cost of $30.00. It was originally planned to have the parishioners move the old church back a sufficient distance so that a new one could be built in its place. At a meeting on March 31, 1883,

the chairman was instructed to get 4 pcs. 10 in. square hemlock, two pcs. to be

40 ft. long and 2 pcs. 30 ft. long to move the old church upon and to underpin said old church with when moved.

Obviously this plan was not carried out. At the same meeting it was decided to call tenders for the completion of the church exterior, with notice to be given in the two "Prince County papers". Tenders were received from John Williams for $1330., and from Edward England for $1100., with the latter being accepted. By November of 1884, the exterior was ready for inspection. Thomas Birch, who had been appointed inspector of new St. James’, was called

upon to carry out this duty, and at a meeting on the ninth of November:
