In his 1890 report to the Diocesan Church Society, Rev. Henry Harper advised of preparations that were made for the Bishop’s visit, and of his pleasure with the congregation’s pride in their church and surroundings: Previous to the Bishop’s visit in October, the church at Port Hill was very nicely kalsomined, and the churchyard fences painted and white-washed. Considering the time and care expended about the Church and surroundings in this place, year after year, there is good reason to believe that there is indeed in the hearts of the people a "Love for the House of God".
