A concert or play was a great social event in the early 1900’s. Young ladies with beautifully decorated baskets containing goodies were allowed in free. At the closing these baskets were auctioned of by H.B.S., as silver-tongued Swabey Birch was familiarly known. Woe betide the young swain who was bidding on his special girl's basket for his "enemies" would combine their wealth and run
him up to $14.00 or even $20.00
We were famous for our goose suppers. At our last supper, the hall was crowded and people filled the porch and even the steps to get in. We found this too big an undertaking and now, instead of goose suppers, we contribute cash donations.
Copies of receipts which follow show that supplies for the early church picnics were
purchased not only from the local store in Port Hill, but from dealers as far away as
Charlottetown and Moncton.
