Also submitted by Mrs. Susan Ellis is the photo below in which she was presented with a gift from St.John’s Congregation in recognition of her faithful service as secretary-treasurer for twenty-seven years. The presentation was made by warden, Mr. Erwin Dennis, who spoke kind words of appreciation on behalf of the congregation. In the background of the photo is the Rector, Rev. Leslie Ball. On July 2, 1989, St. John’s Anglican Church in Ellerslie celebrated its 90th anniversary. A special service was held at 11:00 A.M. with a reception following. In 1905 land adjoining the church was secured for a graveyard, and enclosed with a wire fence. Later that year the graveyard was consecrated by the Bishop. The need for a shed to shelter horses during church services was expressed as early as 1904. Ten years later, in the month of November, a building to accommodate eight to ten teams was completed. Some of the money for this venture was raised by holding a picnic which realized over $120. A portion of the lumber was generously donated by Mr. John Richards. It was not until 1939 that the shed was placed on a concrete foundation. The work itself was done by the men of the congregation, while the members of the Ladies’ Aid provided money for the project. 44
