ST. JOHN’S LADIES’ AID A number of organizations in St. John’s Church have been active over the years including the Little Helpers, the Sunday School, Junior Auxiliary, A.Y.P.A. (Anglican Young Peoples’ Association), and the Ladies’ Aid. The following outline of activities and accomplishments of St. John’s Ladies’ Aid was compiled from an extensive list of notes prepared by Marjorie

MacCaull on the activities of this dedicated group:

St. John’s Ladies’ Aid was organized in 1920 with Mrs. Livingstone Williams elected the first president, and Mrs. Claude Williams the first secretary-treasurer. It appears that the group was very active in its early years as Rev. Henry Harper reported that "During the summer of 1929, St. John’s was decorated inside and out at a cost of approximately $500. This expense was entirely borne by the Ladies’ Aid of the church. This group of keen, energetic and enthusiastic workers is worthy of much praise and commendation". Minutes of a regular meeting held in January 1938 show sixteen members on the roll call; this number reached a peak in 1955 when twenty-six members were enrolled.

Space permits only a brief summary of the achievements and accomplishments of this dedicated group. Their devotion to Christian principles merits commendation and serves as an example to others.

In addition to the many gifts, memorials and generous donations of time and money to St.John’s Church, the A.Y.P.A., the Junior Auxiliary, Sunday School and Little Helpers, they contributed greatly in both time and money to the maintenance of the rectory, Old St. James’ Church, and the Parish of Port Hill. As well they have given regular support to missions, the Prince County Hospital, the Stewart Memorial Hospital, the orphanage, the Orange Lodge Hall, the United Church Hall, the Unitarian Service Committee, the Red Cross, St. Andrew’s Day Care Centre, Camp Kingston, and to many other worthwhile

causes.

The meetings are held at the homes of members, and include not only a period of business and fellowship, but also one of worship, prayer and Bible study.
